This course is intended for first-year students enrolled in the Bachelor's program in English language studies. It is offered as an integrated tutorial across Semesters 1 and 2. The course provides an introduction to the study of linguistics and phonetics, establishing  two essential foundations for any student aiming to specialize in the field of English language: 

  • Linguistics: the scientific study of human language, 
  • Phonetics: a core branch of linguistics that focuses on the description and classification of human speech sounds across all languages.

Course Aims:

  • To develop an understanding of the basic concepts and theories of linguistics, including language structure and function.

  • To explore the key principles of phonetics with an emphasis on the physical properties of speech sounds and their role in communication.
