This course introduces first-year Material Science students to the fundamentals of English as a scientific and communication tool. It aims to develop students’ understanding of grammar, pronunciation, and academic writing while improving oral and written expression in scientific contexts. The course covers sentence structures, verb tenses, and parts of speech relevant to scientific English. It also introduces phonetics and phonology to enhance pronunciation and listening comprehension. Students will learn about the English speech mechanism, the classification of sounds (vowels, diphthongs, and consonants), and phonetic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Through a series of exercises, readings, and oral activities, students will gain the linguistic confidence needed to present scientific ideas clearly and accurately in both written and spoken English.
