This course manual, titled "Industrial
Ecology and Sustainable Development," introduces foundational concepts
studied by first-year Master's students during the second semester,
specializing in electrical machinery. The curriculum aims to provide students
with a comprehensive understanding of industrial ecology, natural ecosystems,
recycling, and sustainable development as applied to industry.
Industrial ecology focuses on the design of
products and manufacturing processes, positioning companies as agents of
environmental improvement due to their essential technological expertise in
creating environmentally conscious products and processes. Industry, as the
primary sector responsible for producing goods and services, is a major—though
not exclusive—source of environmental impact. Industrial ecology uses non-human
ecosystems as models for industrial activity, often referred to as the
"biological analogy."
Chapter Organization
In accordance with the official syllabus,
this course is divided into four chapters:
Chapter 1: Introduces the fundamental concepts of
industrial ecology and sustainable development, including the evolution of
industrial ecology, its objectives, characteristics, principles, and
limitations.
Chapter 2: Provides an in-depth exploration of
industrial ecology globally and in Algeria. Topics include the state of the art
in industrial ecosystems, case studies of ecosystem initiatives in Belgium and
Japan, biodiversity and ecosystem services, measures to enhance the
implementation of the SPANB convention, as well as governance, laws, and
regulations related to industrial ecology.
Chapter 3: Focuses on industrial symbiosis, divided
into two main sections: the closed-loop concept in industrial ecology and the industrial
symbiosis concept. This chapter covers linear transformation processes,
closed-loop operations management, and the well-known Kalundborg symbiosis
model.
Chapter 4: Addresses waste management and recycling.
Topics include waste treatment challenges, the National Waste Agency's DMA-2020
report, and the significance of different waste types, the characterization of
household and similar waste, other municipal waste, and the average composition
of DMA in Algeria for 2018/2019.
