Preface
This document presents the course Communication
and Expression Techniques (CET) in English, designed specifically for
first-year students in the License SNV (Sciences de la Nature et de la Vie)
program in Algeria. The aim of this course is to equip students with the
linguistic and scientific communication skills necessary to succeed in their
academic studies and future careers in biology and related fields.
The course is structured into four
chapters, each addressing a key aspect of scientific communication:
- Chapter 1:
Scientific Vocabulary & Word Mechanics – introduces the building blocks of
scientific terms: prefixes, roots, and suffixes.
- Chapter 2:
Academic Writing & Data Representation – covers note-taking, lab reports, formal
emails, and the student CV.
- Chapter 3:
Scientific Oral Presentations –
focuses on slide design, signposting language, delivery, and Q&A.
- Chapter 4:
Scientific Reading and Comprehension – teaches strategies for reading scientific
articles, understanding abstracts, interpreting graphs and tables, and
using context clues.
Each chapter is self-contained and includes
clear explanations, tables, and figures to illustrate key concepts. At the end
of each chapter, a summary and conclusion reinforce the main points. The
document concludes with a general conclusion that ties together the skills
developed throughout the course.
This material is intended to be used both
as a classroom resource and for self-study. Students are encouraged to practise
the techniques presented, use the tables and figures as reference tools, and
apply the strategies to their own reading, writing, and presentations.
We hope this course will help you become a
confident and effective communicator in the scientific world.
